Social Innovation Comes to WCI

“We acknowledge that WCI students have the power to create meaningful change; that is the purpose of the club!” – James D.

Thursday after school. Room 324. WCIs Social Innovation Club invites anybody who is interested in being a catalyst of change in their school and community. The clubs primary leaders, James & Elizabeth D, Atif M, Arjun P, guide the clubs on their venture to provide positive and tangible change to the local area.

During the weekly meets, members brainstorm and search for issues, in our school or even around the city, that they feel are not addresses and need solutions;

“Grade 9s in the club informed us that their peers were not utilizing their new chromebooks correctly and often played computer games during class time.” – Arjun P.

The group responded. They created a poster campaign to advertise chromebook extensions that increased productivity, and formed a presentation that was presented to all of the grade 9s through the VIP program.

“We also realized that WCI students that are not on student council don’t really have a way to  have their voices heard during the school year.” – Elizabeth D.

The group responded by creating @polls_wci on twitter, which regularly tweets polls to obtain students’ opinions on current events at WCI.

Currently, the group is working on creating an online infographic that has key information about a few important Waterloo-region charities (since it’s the season for giving). Many people, sadly, don’t know about Waterloo’s local charities and are too busy to research them. So they decided to make it easier for us.

The club is planning visits to local incubators (Accelerator Centre, Greenhouse) to observe how to professionally synthesize and execute ideas.

WCIs Social Innovation Club invites anybody who is interested in being a catalyst of change in their school and community. If that’s you…I doubt you’re doing anything thaaat important Thursdays after school anyways 😉
