Located in Downtown Kitchener directly across Charles St. Terminal is Cafe Pyrus. Cafe Pyrus has a wide array of options that are both tasty and well sourced. Pyrus takes a focus on providing food that is organic, local, and sustainable, not to mention that all their food is vegan. They provide ingredients that are tasty, local, and not loaded with pesticides. Their food is a little more expensive than most cafes but they provide quality food that is healthy for you. The average price for a meal, food item, and drink would be approximately $15-20.
There are plenty of options of food here including veggie burgers, sandwiches, bagels, and various baked goods. Their drinks menu has a wide array of espresso drinks, tea, coffee, smoothies, and kombucha. Their meals come with a kaleslaw or side soup, which rotates daily.
When I first walked into the store I was greeted by the staff. The store has a relaxed vibe to it playing chill music and contemporary artwork covering the walls. I chose to order one of their sandwiches which is called “The Angry Vegan.” This sandwich is on panini bread and comes topped with caramelized onion, tomato, spinach, artichoke spread and you can have the choice of aged cheddar or Daiya, which is vegan cheese. The sandwich was full of flavour and a refreshing option for vegans. The sandwich was pressed which just amplified the quality flavour throughout the sandwich. The artichoke spread and caramelized onion were made perfectly and full of tasty flavours. The soup that came with the sandwich was Jalapeno Potato. I found that this soup complimented the sandwich and was also full of flavour. I enjoyed the pairing of jalapeno and potato and the spice didn’t overpower the soup. Overall, I was very pleased with the sandwich as most vegan fast food can be very hit or miss.
For a drink, I ordered a latte. I found their espresso to be tasty and full of flavour. Their coffee was definitely worth the price as I thoroughly enjoyed every sip of it. For drinks, you are given the choice of 2% dairy milk, almond milk, or soy milk which further accommodates various allergies.
Overall, I was very pleased with my experience to Cafe Pyrus. It is refreshing to go to a restaurant where everything on the menu is vegan rather than having to customize menu items in order to be able to eat it. I believed their food to be well worth the money as the ingredients are of quality and helping sustain the planet.
