Waterloo Collegiate has been a constant partner and ally for the refugee community both within the school walls and beyond. Crossing Borders and Cultural Mosaic clubs aim at bringing refugees and non-birth Canadians together with birth-Canadians to build relationships and foster confidence in those navigating completely new environments. Also, the annual “Multi” show, a multicultural showcase event, has done work to accurately represent different cultures, including those of refugees and their struggles. Proceeds of this show have been donated to the Mennonite Coalition for Refugee Support, a local organization that supports the claims processes and integration of refugees and their families in the Waterloo Region.
In light of the hundreds of Syrian refugees who will be embraced by the greater Waterloo Region community in the coming months, WCI is extending its support for refugees by committing to a number of initiatives that will provide the support needed for the many families that are now coming to the region. A partnership between Calvary United Church in St. Jacobs and WCI hopes to raise $30,000, enough to assist a single family for their first year here.
There are a number of ways that you can assist:
- Monetary donation through Calvary United Church via Canada Helps (under drop down menu, select WCI/Calvary Refugee Fund)
- In-kind donations (clothing, services, and other goods) brought to the school
We will be continually updating this page regularly with WCI’s fundraising efforts as well as any further information concerning refugee support, and how you can help.
