For most WCI students, some of these restaurants serve as the perfect place to buy and enjoy their lunch. After all, Tim Horton’s and McDonald’s are a ten minute walk away, and Starbucks and several other restaurants lurk just around the corner. To most students, these are great places for cheap, fast food. But what about students who are aiming to eat healthier? For those students, McDonald’s just doesn’t make the cut.
All hope isn’t lost, however! There are a variety of cheap and healthy fast-food restaurants within a short distance of WCI, and here are three of them:
Subway is a well-known submarine sandwich (better known as sub) restaurant. Open since 1965, Subway states, “We’ve become the leading choice for people seeking quick, nutritious meals that the whole family can enjoy.” Located about ten minutes away at 285 King Street North, Waterloo, the chain restaurant offers several dining options with a variety of affordable prices. With their 6-inch subs ranging from $4 to $5.50, and their footlongs ranging from $5.50 to $9, you can have a highly ”
“customizable” and healthy meal.
Also, despite their name, subs aren’t the only things offered at this restaurant. They also offer a wide variety of soups, salads, sides, drinks, kids meals, and even breakfast meals! Just to give an example, the price of salads ranges from $5 to $7.50, and soups cost $2.50. Cookies, their most popular side, cost anywhere from $0.65 to $1.50 each. Another popular option is the flatizza, which is $3.50. Their kids’ meals and breakfast meals range from $3.50 to $5.50.
Freshii is a newer restaurant in K-W, but it is extremely popular in Toronto. Freshi won the award for 2013’s Top Franchise of the Year in Canada and opened their very first store in 2005. Freshii states, “Through our vision of ‘Eat. Energize.’ Freshii is focused on providing fresh and nutritious meal choices that energize people on the go.” Located at 6-255 King Street North, Waterloo, Freshii is an 11 minute walk or a three-minute drive from WCI, almost the same distance as Mcdonald’s, Harvey’s, Bianca’s Pizza and Pizza Pizza.
Freshii’s idea is to “create a restaurant brand that help[s] people all over the world live healthier and longer lives by making healthy food affordable and convenient,” and they have done just that. They have a wide variety of different foods at different prices, ensuring that there is something for everyone. Wraps range from $6.99 to $8.49, salads from $7.99 to $9.49, bowls from $6.99 to $8.99, soups from $6.99 to $7.49, chili at $8.99, juice and smoothies at $5.99, and frozen yogurt at $4.99 with two toppings (additional toppings are $0.50 each).
3. Grace and Healthy Dumplings
Grace and Healthy Dumplings is a lesser known restaurant, located at 150 University Avenue West, Waterloo. Grace and Healthy Dumplings serve, as their name states, dumplings. They do, however, sell salads, side dishes, juice, tea, and uncooked dumplings, for if you enjoy cooking your food yourself. On the top of their menus, they ensure that “All meats are local, GRASS fed and contain no added hormones or additives.”
They have many different dumpling options at many different prices, ranging from $6.50 to $12.99. Their salads are incredibly low in price, ranging from $2.00 to $3.50, allowing about just everyone to have a chance to eat something healthy without spending too much money. Their side dishes are inexpensive as well, ranging from $1.00 to $2.00, and their tea and juices are only $0.50 to $1.00. Want to take dumplings home to cook for yourself? No problem! Uncooked dumplings range from $5.50 to $8.50 for 12, or $7.00 to $11.50 for 16.
