The WCI parking lot situation is getting out of hand. At the end of the day, everyone leaves at the same time. This creates so much traffic in the parking lot and all the way down Hazel street. The 7 school busses that block the street make it 10x harder to leave at the end of the day. Upper parking lot is worse than the lower parking lot. Teachers, students and parents all park up here and wait to get out at 2:25, when the bell rings.
We interviewed Mr. Leeming, and he shared with us his true feelings about this situation. “ [I park] in upper. I actually leave at twenty-to-three. It takes me about 20-25 minutes to get out, because I have to wait for the busses, and everyone is leaving at the same time. There is only one exit, so if there was a second exit even, it would be a lot better. I don’t know what the solution would be, but it is a problem.”
Many grade 12 students have their own cars. We asked Tracy, B. She told us how she felt about this issue. “I park in upper. I try to leave school, right when the bell rings. It usually takes me 15-20 minutes, just to get out of the parking lot. It then takes me an extra 5 minutes to get off of Hazel street. It’s really hard for me to get out because half the time, no one lets me in. I am just waiting for that one person who knows how to drive, and let me in. If no one lets me in, I have to be an aggressive driver or else I’d never leave school. Once I am out of the parking lot, it is still a challenge to leave Hazel street because the busses eventually need to leave, so we can’t move. Many parents also park in the MIDDLE of the parking lot, which is so hard to get around. Students and teachers cross the street without looking which is a big concern. I feel like this issue needs to be addressed and we need to find a solution to fix it.”
Cheaten, P. echoed Tracy. “I always park in upper lot. I always leave the school right at 2:25 everyday. I find it really annoying how long it takes to get out of the parking lot at the end of the day. I don’t understand why people rather wait for the busses, then to make a right turn to go all the way around the school. I also hate how people can be so selfish and not let people into the line to get out of the parking lot. It should be one person should let one in and the next lets another in, and continues.”
Overall, the parking lot at the end of the day is inconvenient and potentially unsafe. Hopefully a coordinated effort to solve the issue is forthcoming.
