Video Games – The Appealing Plots and Magnificent Special Effects

Many people nowadays treat video games as a great way to spend time and relax, no matter if they’re professional gamers or ordinary players, they all like to dump the heavy burden from the real world and start a whole new journey in the fantasy world. You might live a normal or even boring life and repeat it every day, but you can always choose to be either a hero or a devil in the unreal gaming world and do whatever you want. You get to enjoy the pleasure brought by the experience of characters in many different games. You may become a swordsman in medieval Europe; You may enjoy travelling through different planets; You may manipulate a group of people and decide their destinies; You may become a villain or a philanthropist based on your own judgements. When you were touring in another dimension of the world and dazzled by tons of gorgeous special effects, did you think of the process of game production and why it attracts you so much?

Creating a video game is always a long, multifaceted process. This requires a large group of artists, designers, programmers and engineers working together to get the final product. Firstly, video games are always based on settings, plots and characters. Some of them need a complete worldview. An impeccable background is always the factor that determines the achievements of games which focus mainly on plots and stories. Things behind the huge success are the efforts of scriptwriters and designers. Taking The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as an example, its world outlook and background are generally based on a Polish novel – The Witcher. The game production team made a recompose for major plots and added more side stories. The game is set in the Continent, a fantasy world surrounded by parallel dimensions and extra-dimensional worlds. Humans, elves, dwarves, monsters and other creatures co-exist on the Continent, but non-humans are often persecuted for their differences. The background provides players with infinite chances to experience a fantasy world in the perspective of a special being – witcher Geralt of Rivia, a mutated man with unique swordsmanship and the power of Spell. After setting the era and the main characters, the script finished by scriptwriters are also obviously essential. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt becomes so famous due to its fantastic story. On Geralt’s journey to find his daughter and fight against the wild hunt, characters of flesh and blood are gradually shaped, both comedies and tragedies take place and you can simply immerse into that sword and sorcery endlessly.

This condition not only suits for Console games. Even for PVP online games, with abundant backstory and vivid characters, players will easily fall in love with some characters and therefore love the whole game. A simple example for that is the huge success of Overwatch. It is set sixty years into the future on a fictionalized Earth, thirty years after the resolution of what is known as the “Omnic Crisis”. Prior to the Omnic Crisis, humanity had been in a golden age of prosperity and technology development. Blizzard made and keeps on making animation shorts to enrich the background story and shape characters. It is a great combination between FPS and MOBA and also provides gamers with chances to feel the charm of different heroes, no matter noble or treacherous.

PUBG seems to be an exception, but as its heat return to normal level, the gameplay is obviously not enough to attract picky players for a long time. Video games like Fortnite are not bad for the current market, but they are doomed to fade away as time goes and finally leave no trace. The appealing plots are the basis of a successful game, without a thorough and impeccable setting and some vivid characters, video games cannot escape the destiny of obsolescent. That is not to say, the innovation and update game modes can be ignored and they worth nothing, games like Counter-Strike 1.6 help create a platform and encourage later game developers to optimize and innovate and create better ones.

Besides plots and gameplay, graphics and special effects are also the main factors that determine if players will be attracted. With the development of computer technology and the upgrade of hardware especially processors and graphics cards, video games are becoming more and more realistic and the special effects are getting more and more magnificent. The truth is, nowadays, no matter what the scale of the video games is, they are based on game engines. Notable titles made with Unreal Engine include the Gears of War series, Mass Effect series, Bioshock series, and the Batman: Arkham series. Pokémon GO, Super Mario Run, Angry Birds 2, Wasteland 2 are productions of Unity Engine, while Far Cry, Crysis, Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 are based on CryEngine. Also, some famous game studios have their own game engines, The Witcher 3 is developed by REDengine 3, which was designed by CD Project Red, Rockstar has their own Rockstar Advanced Game Engine to make games like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. Although the engines save programmers’ a lot of time, they still have plenty of logic works to do in order to make the game alive. After getting the instructions from planners and designers, programmers start to do a large amount of programming work. Game engines supply most functions but it is also necessary to do many details with the help of programmers. Their work is basically writing game script documents, with which players get to control the characters and do a series of complicated actions. This largely decides the quality of a, generally speaking, first-class game.

At present, video games are not regarded as spiritual opium for people anymore, some excellent ones can even be determined as another form of art. Things behind the game industry still remain mysterious and attractive for most of us – the game players.
