New Year Brings New Movies!

The new year is upon us, and so is a brand new lineup of movies to see at the theatre or on one of the streaming apps. So, like any entertainment website would do, I am going to list the top 10 movies to get you excited!

My Spy (January 8, 2020)

Chloe Coleman & Dave Bautista perform the obligatory Epic Spy Walk

A girl blackmails a spy into training her to become one, after she catches him in the middle of a mission.

Director: Peter Segal

Starring: Dave Bautista, Kristen Schaal, Chloe Coleman

Why I’m Excited: I saw the trailer and read a few interviews about this film, and it looks quite fun. Good, light-hearted humour and fun with spunky characters. I’d go see it!

Dolittle (January 17, 2020)

Robert Downey Jr. and his animal crew assemble

Dr. Dolittle comes alive once more with an iron fist and a talent that only fairytale princesses and this guy have: talking to animals.

Director: Stephen Gaghan

Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Emma Thompson, Michael Sheen

Why I’m Excited: Seriously though, this is Robert Downey Jr’s first film after being Iron Man for so long, and his first family film since The Shaggy Dog (2006). I personally love talking animals, so I’m definitely seeing this one. Not to mention, many big stars, such as Rami Malek, Antonio Bandaras, Tom Holland, and Ralph Fiennes, are in this movie!

Birds of Prey (February 7, 2020)

Rosie Perez, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Margot Robbie, Ella Jay Basco, & Jurnee Smollett-Bell are about to have some fun

After Harley Quinn breaks up with Joker, she and four other girls gang up to take out an enemy who despises all of them for different reasons.

Director: Cathy Yan

Starring: Margot Robbie, Rosie Perez, Ewan McGregor

Why I’m Excited: It looks pretty cool! It’s a bunch of girls having fun. We don’t get to see very many movies like that, so if you simply just want to see girls have genuine fun, this movie is right up your alley!

Onward (March 4 2020)

Ian (Tom Holland) & Barley Lightfoot (Chris Pratt) relaxing during their quest

Onward is the tale of two brothers who go on a quest to bring back their father for 24 hours, while their mother goes on a quest of her own to save the boys from a curse.

Director: Dan Scanlon

Starring: Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Why I’m Excited: It seems to be a modern take on the magical fantasy genre, with humour and heart. It looks very good, and I never pass up a good Disney movie.

Mulan (March 27 2020)

Liu Yifel ready for action

When a girl fails the test to become a bride and bring her family honour, she impersonates a male soldier and saves China instead.

Director: Niki Caro (The Zookeeper’s Wife)

Starring: Liu Yifel, Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee

Why I’m Excited: I have to be honest, I’m actually really curious to see where this goes. It’s a new take on an old legend, and there’s a witch that Mulan must fight as well. She looks awesome. I love a tale of female empowerment, and Mulan has always been an inspiring tale for me, so I’m seeing it!

Black Widow (May 1, 2020)

Scarlett Johansson taking out bad guys

It’s a “midquel” after the Civil War and Natasha Romanoff is on the run from the government and forced to confront her mysterious past.

Director: Cate Shortland (Somersault)

Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour

Why I’m Excited: Finally, we have a movie about Black Widow. And apparently, there’s more than Black Widow! Any content involving our fierce, female Avenger is worth seeing!

Wonder Woman (June 5 2020)

Gal Gadot suits up

In 1984, Wonder Woman faces off with two new foes and reunites with Steve Trevor. Or does she?

Director: Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman [2017])

Starring: Gal Gadot, Kristen Wiig, Chris Pine

Why I’m Excited: It’s Wonder Woman IN A NEW SUIT with funky 80’s music! What’s not to love?! We get to see the exciting superhero once more!!!

In the Heights (June 26 2020)

The barrio ships it. Anthony Ramos & Melissa Barrera (centre)

Based on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first musical, In the Heights takes place in a barrio (Spanish for neighbourhood) of Washington Heights, where Usnavi dreams of returning to his home country, and Nina struggles with the pressure of being the model graduate for her family.

Director: Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians)

Starring: Anthony Ramos, Stephanie Beatriz, Jimmy Smits

With a hopeful message and a joyous score, this movie is a must-see for all musical lovers!

Free Guy (July 3 2020)

A normal Tuesday morning for Ryan Reynolds

A non-player character in a multi-platform video game suddenly takes on the role of a hero.

Director: Shawn Levy

Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi

Why I’m Excited: While it is fun to see Ryan Reynolds in a new movie, the main reason I’m excited is that Seán “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin, a gaming Youtuber with 23 million subscribers on his platform, has a cameo in the movie.

Jacksepticeye in his natural habitat

Jacksepticeye has become a favourite Youtuber of mine, and he has done his own acting before, complete with his own characters!

Honestly, if you love Ryan Reynolds or you want to see Jacksepticeye and other gaming Youtubers like Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, Imane “Pokamine” Anys, and Lannan “Lazerbeam” Eacott on the big screen, go see this movie!

Eternals (November 6, 2020)

The very big cast of Eternals premiere their characters for the movie

This is movie is based on the Marvel/Jack Kirby comics and is about an immortal alien race who protects humanity from evil “Deviants”.

Director: Chloé Zhao

Starring: Angelina Jolie, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek

Why I’m Excited: The entire cast list also has Kit Harrington, Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, and Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, the first deaf Marvel Superhero (Ridloff is deaf as well). With a cast like that and a new, compelling storyline, this is a must-see for me!

And those are my top ten movies I want to see this year! Time to start booking tickets and buying popcorn!!!
